r/cats • 11 days ago -b_i_n_g_u_s- I found this elderly cat in a bad way back in June.

She had been hit by a car. I took her to an emergency vet where they kept her for 5 weeks operating and treating her! I called almost every day asking for an update because I was so worried about her. She had not been nurtured and had no microchip, but had a tattered old cheap flea collar on that has made her bald on her neck.

I thought she must be a lost cat and did everything I could to try and find her owner whilst she was in the vets. I posted on every lost pet group and went door to door in my whole neighbourhood and surrounding areas. Nobody was missing a cat.

Once she was well enough to leave the vets, I just had to adopt her. I had to save her from having to go to a shelter, she'd already been through enough. I brought her home in July, she had been shaven because her fur was so matted and causing skin rashes and irritations. Her fur has never grown back on her neck and probably never will.

Now I've had her for a couple of months, she has really settled in nicely. She's thoroughly enjoying her retirement. She has a lovely little brother who has always been welcoming and often grooms her, even if she's not always keen.

The vets thought she had been outside for over a year and was approximately 17 years old. She spends her time sunbathing in the garden, snoozing in her box bed and stealing her brothers food. Oh and she follows me everywhere.

She is just a sweet old lady who wants nothing more than a safe, comfy spot to call her own (and her brothers food of course). Meet Dorothy, aka Dottie.

I've included photos from when I found her, when she first came home and more recent ones where she's settled in. She looks like a whole new cat!

Additionally, I was wondering if anybody had any tips about litter training; Dottie has always gone straight to the tray, but she sticks her rear end over the edge and pees on the floor. It's like she thinks she's in there properly because all four legs are in, but she sticks her bum out and pees over the edge.

Is there anything I can do to teach her to get further in? I've tried litter trays of all shapes and sizes, even the closed cover ones.

She also struggles with grooming and barely ever cleans herself, I brush her daily and clean up her eyes but I have had to bath her after bringing her home because she was so stinky.
